A-Letheia

Stranger Land, both A-Letheia Kiosks, interactive installation, photocollage, photo: Stathis Mamalakis, retouching and collage: Igor Kritsky and Anton Kats

Working within the context of aneducation, artist Anton Kats has initiated a project that engages directly with the Athens periptera (kiosks) as spaces for encounter. Aletheia is a Greek word meaning truth, frankness, or sincerity. It is the opposite of lethe, which means forgetfulness. The neologism A-Letheia suggests “a truth,” something drifting between remembering and forgetting. Responding to the gradual disappearance of the kiosks in Athens, the project is situated between two inactive kiosks located in the neighborhoods of Psyri and Kypseli. A-Letheia invites residents, local artists, and organizations to rewrite public space and explore the erasure of architectures of memory through a series of walks and workshops. A-Letheia is conceived as a long lasting process that might see the kiosks resist the erosion of time to become social and interactive sculptures and sites of learning.
