Stadtmuseum Kassel

Similar to the Landesmuseum a couple of blocks to the south, the Stadtmuseum has had a recent rebirth. Founded in 1979 inside a typical 1870s Gründerzeit building, it reopened in 2016 after a long period of rebuilding and renovation. For the first time in their history, both the Stadtmuseum and the Landesmuseum occupy prominent positions in documenta’s urban cartography. One museum is dedicated to thinking the city, the other devoted to imagining the “Land” or province: and so questions of habitation, citizenship, and belonging, as well as considerations of what constitutes both a public and a community, have played a part in the configuration of documenta 14 projects in these two venues. Inside the Stadtmuseum, urban portraiture intersects with an interrogation of the many meanings of citizenship; from it, a more self-reflexive notion of Stadt arises.
