  • Reminiszenzen aus Deutschland, Jonas Mekas, 1971/1993, edited 2012, Germany, 25 min. German and English with English and German subtitles, BALi-Kinos

A non-chronological presentation of the filmmaker’s time in German forced labour camps and displaced person camps, a story that begins in 1944 and goes on until 1949.

  • I Had Nowhere to Go: A Portrait of a Displaced Person, Douglas Gordon, 2016, Germany, 97 min. English, CineStar

Douglas Gordon’s I had nowhere to go (2016) draws from the diaries of Jonas Mekas. Only a few images are shown in the film. Instead, Mekas’s voice recounting his daily life as a young immigrant fills the air.

10:15 am

  • Memories of the Eichmann Trial, David Perlov, 1979, Israel, 60 min. Hebrew with English subtitles, BALi-Kinos

Memories of the Eichmann Trial includes reminiscences by trial witnesses, Holocaust survivors, Israelis of the second generation, and others who were directly involved in the Eichmann case. Prominent among them are Henryk Ross, a Polish Jew who, with the help of his wife Stefania, took clandestine photographs of life in the Łódź Ghetto while carrying out Nazi orders to record information about Jews on their way to the death camps; and Rafi Eitan, who led the operation to capture Eichmann in Argentina, in 1961. Broadcast only once on Israeli television in 1979, Memories of the Eichmann Trial was rediscovered and restored in 2011.

10:30 am

  • Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania, Jonas Mekas, 1972, Austria/Germany/Lithuania/USA/Russia, 82 min. English with German and English subtitles, BALi-Kinos

A diary film accompanied by voice over which features highly personal footage that was filmed in different times and places over the course of the filmmaker’s life.

11:15 am

  • In Search of Ladino, David Perlov, 1981, Israel, 60 min. Hebrew and Ladino with English subtitles, BALi-Kinos

Developed by Jews who were expelled from Spain and found refuge in other European countries, Ladino is a language that was widely used until the establishment of the state of Israel. In Search of Ladino is a journey that encounters different faces in unexpected places, including a Jaffa club, a market in Tel Aviv, and the streets of Jerusalem while following the traces of traditions, songs, and memories of a bygone Jewish culture.

12 noon

  • An Opera of the World, Manthia Diawara, 2017, Portugal/USA/Mali, 70 min. English with German subtitles, BALi-Kino

In An Opera of the World, Malian filmmaker Manthia Diawara reflects upon the refugee crisis and the relationship between Europe and Africa. The film revolves around a performance of Bintou Were, a Sahel Opera in Bamako, around which Diawara builds a story about migration, interweaving interviews with documentary and archival footage.

Diary is the magnum opus of the Israeli documentarian and pedagogue David Perlov, shot over a period of ten years. Perlov, who immigrated to Israel from Brazil in the late 1950s, documents his everyday life, capturing personal family moments along with political and social changes in Israeli society. A meandering stream of consciousness that mixes the quotidian with historical events and free associations from the director’s past life and aesthetic inklings, Perlov’s self-annotated footage offers both spontaneous and ruminative moments.

1:15 pm

  • Yizhi (Traces), Wang Bing, 2014, Hong Kong (PR China), 25 min., Mandarin with English subtitles, Gloria Kino

1:30 pm

  • Lost, Lost, Lost, Jonas Mekas, 1976, USA, 178 min. English with English and German subtitles, BALi-Kinos

  • Le fort des fous (Madmen’s Fort), Narimane Mari, 2017, Algeria/Greece/France, 140 min. Arabic, French, Greek, English with English subtitles, Ballhaus

Departing from material records of the early colonial “scientific expeditions” and “taming campaigns” led by the French colonizers in North Africa, the story follows a community of young nomads and wanderers as they form an imagined utopian society. Reenactments, improvisations, and interviews performed and conducted with the inhabitants of Algiers, Kythira Island, and the Prosfygika community in Athens inform this work as instances of alternative temporality and autonomous space.
