Gloria-Kino

Gloria-Kino, photo: Mathias Völzke

Gloria-Kino first opened its doors in 1954. Today it retains the typical architecture of its time, while the interior was renovated in the 1980s. An important venue in Kassel’s cinema landscape, the cinema was run by an independent company until the first multi-complex cinema in Kassel opened in 2000; BALi-Kinos took over soon after.

During documenta 14, Gloria-Kino is the site for Wang Bing: Retrospective. A comprehensive monographic presentation running for one hundred days, the program features screenings of the artist’s full filmography alongside an exhibition of photography and archival materials. The exhibition introduces Wang Bing’s ongoing investigation into the difficult socioeconomic conditions of present-day life in China, as well his ceaseless research on the history of violence during the Maoist China era.
