Artistic Director of documenta 14 Adam Szymczyk was on a recent research trip to Johannesburg and Bamako when German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Athens, where the minister made the much-publicized statement (of October 29, 2015) that he hoped documenta might build “an artistic bridge between Germany and Greece.” In response, Szymczyk has expressed the conviction that documenta 14 will “indeed contribute to building a bridge—a political one, over which the refugees who need to find a safe home in Europe might be able to walk.”
